Back to Basics
Most people take their teeth and gums for granted until something like a cavity, signs of gum disease, or other dental issue needs to be addressed. Our dental team always works to help prevent these conditions in our patients. Here are some basic tips on caring for your oral health to help avoid painful and inconvenient dental conditions.
Choose a Good Toothbrush
Yes, the type of toothbrush you use can make a difference in your overall dental care. The size of the toothbrush head should easily access all the surfaces of your teeth. Larger toothbrush heads make it difficult to move around in your mouth. Soft bristled brushes are the best. Also, the bristles should have rounded tips which help protect your teeth and gums, which can be damaged if you brush too hard. You should also replace your toothbrush every 4-6 months.
The Right Way To Brush
Believe it or not, there is such as thing as proper brushing technique. Start with placing your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gums. Then gently move the brush back and forth in short strokes. Continue to brush all the surfaces of your teeth. Don’t forget those back molars!
Floss Is Your Friend
We recommend flossing at least once a day. Use wax floss to easily get between teeth or if you prefer, a flossing stick can do the trick. Flossing before brushing can help reduce dental plaque, as well as help fluoride from toothpaste better reach your teeth. And make sure to floss all the teeth you want to keep!
