Bad Dental Habits To Stop Today
At Family Friendly Dentistry, we do our best to ensure our patients have excellent oral health. Aside from treating our patients in our office, we also do our best to educate patients on how to properly care for their teeth at home. We often share the best practices to help develop a helpful oral health routine. Today, we want to take a few moments to discuss some dental habits that are harming your oral health. There are quite a few bad dental habits that can lead to discomfort as well as a dental emergency. These include:
Using Your Teeth as Tools
When scissors are not handy it is tempting to use your mouth to open a package or cut a tag. Although it may seem like we have a built in tool, that is hardly the case. Using your teeth as a tool will eventually cause them to crack or break. We suggest taking a few extra moments and using a proper tool.
Biting Your Nails
This is one of the most popular bad habits that we see from patients. Not only does biting your nails lead to cracked and broken teeth, but it is also increasing your chances of becoming ill from the germs and bacteria.
Grinding Your Teeth
Many patients are unaware they have this bad habit because it frequently occurs at night when sleeping. Grinding and clenching your teeth can lead to worn teeth and cracked and broken rear molars.
Frequent Snacking
Snacking throughout the day greatly increases your chances of developing tooth decay. Harmful bacteria linger on the teeth and will eventually lead to the need for dental treatments. This is also true if you enjoy sipping on sugary drinks throughout the day as well.
If you are in the Terre Haute, IN area and are concerned that any of these bad habits have already caused damage to your teeth, please call our office to schedule an appointment. We can work together to come up with a dental plan that is right for you and your needs. We look forward to seeing you soon!
