Extra Protection Against Tooth Decay
We know you work hard to keep your teeth healthy. Brushing twice a day, flossing at least once a day, and keeping up with regular dental checkups are just some of the ways to practice good dental hygiene. However, there are some habits or conditions that can put teeth at risk and cause tooth decay no matter how well you keep up with your dental routine.
Snacking often, eating sugary food, or even a lack of fluoride in your drinking water can contribute to cavities. Additionally, younger patients may not always brush and floss consistently, which commonly leads to cavities in this age group.
The good news is that fluoride treatments done at our office can give you an added layer of protection to prevent decay and keep your teeth strong. Fluoride helps protect teeth by strengthening and remineralizing weakened tooth enamel. It bonds new enamel to the teeth, making them stronger and more resistant to acid. What’s more, fluoride can also help you avoid tooth decay and gum disease caused by excess plaque.
A fluoride treatment just takes a few minutes to apply. We use a gel application and brush it on the surface of your teeth. This is typically done after a routine cleaning, so your teeth are as clean as can be before we apply the fluoride. After the treatment, we advise you not to rinse, eat, or drink for at least 30 minutes to give your teeth time to absorb the fluoride.
