For Healthy Teeth & Gums — What We Recommend
Happy 2024! With the start of the new year, it is a common practice to take time to reflect on the prior year and make changes to improve your life. We want our patients to reflect on their oral health. If it has been some time since you and your family visited our office for an oral hygiene examination and cleaning, there is no better time to schedule an appointment. Even if you have an excellent oral hygiene routine, regular cleanings and examinations in our office are necessary. Read on to learn more about the importance of professional cleanings.
Why Do We Recommend Routine Hygiene Examinations?
The majority of our patients are recommended to visit our office for dental cleanings every four to six months, which for most people is two to three times per year. That leaves patients responsible for caring for their teeth the other 363 or 362 days of the year. Even patients who clean their teeth meticulously still need cleanings. Bacteria love to make a home in your mouth, and once they’ve settled in, they’re difficult to get rid of. So, even if you are a perfectionist with the way you brush and floss your teeth, we still need to remove any lingering bacteria and plaque from the surfaces of your teeth and along the gumline. When you skip dental appointments, plaque will continue to accumulate, leading to dental decay and other problems.
Promote Healthy Gums
One of the most common dental issues that adults experience is gum disease. In fact, more than half of American adults will be affected by gum disease in their lifetime. Gum disease can lead to inflammation and infection in the gum tissue surrounding the teeth. When gum disease is allowed to progress without intervention, it can lead to serious complications, such as tooth loss. If you notice your gums are red and swollen, you may have gum disease. During your routine visits, we can thoroughly check your gums to determine if a problem is developing.
