Summer Dental Tips for Kids
Adults and children alike have a special love for the summer months. There is just something magical about this season that offers a feeling of relaxation. We love when our patients share stories about their plans for the summer. We do want to give a bit of a warning that it is very easy to enjoy the carefree days of summer and become lax with the regular routine such as dental care. With all the merriment, it can become easy to get swept up in the fun times and forget about brushing and cleaning teeth. The last thing we want is for summer enjoyment to lead to decay and dental problems in the fall. We wanted to share some tips to help your young one’s teeth remain healthy this summer:
Brush and Floss
Even on the busiest days and the longest nights, don’t forget to have your children brush their teeth and floss daily. This is the best way to remove bacteria and help prevent decay.
Prepare Healthy Snacks
Summertime seems to turn children into bottomless pits who are constantly hungry and craving endless amounts of snacks. It is best to plan ahead and prepare healthy grab and go snacks that are not filled with sugar and unhealthy ingredients. Some suggestions are:
- Fresh fruit
- Carrot sticks and dip
- Crackers and cheese
- Yogurt
- Cheese sticks
- Lunch meat roll-ups
Drink Plenty of Water
During the heat, it can be easy for children to grab a juice box or soft drink when they are thirsty; however, these drinks are full of sugar. We suggest having plenty of cold water on hand. Planning ahead with a favorite water bottle that can be used daily is always a hit with young ones.
