TMJ Awareness
Do you often wake up with a headache or experience regular, unexplained discomfort in your jaw? If so, you may be suffering from a common condition known as TMJ. This month is TMJ Awareness Month, so we want to explain more about this condition, given that so many people suffer but remain undiagnosed. We hope to provide awareness and support to those who suffer from this condition and help them find relief and treatment solutions. Read on to learn more about TMJ and to determine if you or a loved one is likely suffering from this condition.
What is TMJ?
TMJ stands for the temporomandibular joint, which is responsible for opening and closing the jaw. You may also hear the term TMD, which refers to temporomandibular joint disorder. People often use TMJ and TMD interchangeably when referring to the disorder. Patients with this condition can experience:
- Jaw pain and discomfort
- Face, back, or neck pain
- Frequent headaches
- Earache or ringing in the ears
- Lockjaw
- Clicking or popping of the jaw
Importance of Awareness
Unfortunately, many people do not realize they are suffering from this common condition. Because the symptoms closely resemble those of other issues, it is not unusual for people experiencing complications to visit a different medical professional looking for answers. If a treatment is recommended, it is often ineffective, leaving these individuals frustrated and still in discomfort. TMD is a condition that will continue to progress and lead to serious complications with your oral and overall health.
Ways You Can Help Your Symptoms
There are a number of things you can do while you wait for a diagnosis and to start treatment. They include:
- Eating a soft food diet
- Taking an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory
- Gently massaging your jaw
- Trying to relax and avoid stress
