Importance Of An Oral Hygiene Routine
At Family Friendly Dentistry, we want you and your family to have excellent oral health. This is one of the reasons we are passionate about routine hygiene examinations for you and your family every four to six months. During these appointments we are able to remove any lingering plaque and bacteria from your mouth as well as inspect your teeth for signs of decay, gum disease, and oral cancer.
We see patients so infrequently during the year that the bulk of your oral care falls on their shoulders. Not only should you be regularly inspecting your teeth for signs of a problem, but you should have an oral hygiene routine established. It is important to remember that the ultimate goal of oral health care should be to keep your natural teeth throughout your lifetime. One of the best habits that you can start for yourself and your family is to create an effective oral hygiene routine. Do you know how to properly care for your teeth and gums?
Helpful Tips
We want to share some helpful tips to ensure you are properly cleaning your teeth and gums:
- Set a timer to ensure you are brushing for a full two minutes
- Make sure to brush the front, back and top of teeth – don’t forget your tongue and along the gumline
- Be sure to use dental floss daily
- An electric toothbrush can be helpful to be sure each tooth is being reached
- Floss your teeth in the shape of a “C” to be sure you are getting under the gums
- Help children brush who may have difficulty reaching the back molars
What Happens if You Don’t Have a Good Routine
You would be surprised at how quickly your oral health can decline if you are not cleaning your teeth properly. It will be even faster if you are a frequent snacker or like to eat sugary foods and drink liquids high in sugar. Not caring for your teeth properly will lead to the need for dental treatments and the potential for recurring dental problems in the future.
If you have any questions about the state of your oral health, are in need of a hygiene examination and cleaning, or need to schedule a recommended treatment you have been postponing, be sure to contact our office located in Terre Haute, IN. We look forward to seeing you and your family soon!
